Number 3 INTERMITTENT CALF AND FOOT COMPRESSION INCREASES
AR Eze, AJ Comerota, P Cisek, BS Holland, RP Kerr, R Veeramasuneni, AJ Comerota, Jr. ArtAssist® was applied to a group of patients with angiographically documented occlusion of the superficial femoral artery and patent popliteal arteries with ABI's <0.8. Also studied was a control group of normal volunteers. Skin blood flow at the great toe was measured with laser Doppler and popliteal blood flow was measured using duplex ultrasonography. Patients and normals were in the sitting position and ArtAssist compression was studied with foot/ankle only compressions, calf compression only and simultaneous foot/ankle and calf compression., Results in normals and patients show substantial increases in both popliteal artery flow and skin blood flow. The greatest increase in popliteal artery flow resulted from compression to the foot/ankle and calf. Absolute values of skin and arterial blood flow were consistently higher in the patients studied.
