ArtAssist® Device

Understanding PAD ArtAssist Device How to Order

Device Information

The ArtAssist device is recommended for:

  • Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
  • Diabetic foot ulcers from poor blood flow
  • Arterial ulcers
  • Intermittent Claudication: If you are experiencing pain while walking and relief when you rest
  • Rest Pain: If you experience constant pain, even at rest

This device was developed by vascular surgeons to increase arterial blood flow. It applies a massage-like compression to the foot, ankle and calf to circulate blood flow. There are no known side effects.

The ArtAssist device is a doctor prescribed therapy that takes place in the comfort of your own home. The ArtAssist device and all accessories are shipped directly to you, including an instructional DVD to guide you in its proper use. Telephone support is free.  It is portable and easy to use. Simply sit down, apply the cuff(s), and turn it on. The ArtAssist device will do the rest. The cuffs are made of soft, durable material designed to last for months of therapy.

Recommended use is 3 hours daily but your prescribing physician may change that. Positive results should be seen within the first month of therapy. After at least 3 months of use, small vessels called “collaterals” may form which provide long term blood flow improvements.  The ArtAssist device is typically rented for at least 3 months to give collaterals a chance to open, but the device may also be purchased. The average rental period is 3-6 months.  Once you have obtained results and therapy is completed, the device will be picked up and returned to ACI Medical.

Clinical studies have shown that the ArtAssist device:

  • triples blood flow during use
  • dramatically increases pain-free walking distance
  • heals arterial ulcers
  • saves limbs from amputation
  • opens collateral arteries in a process called “arteriogenesis”

How Does the ArtAssist Device Work?

The ArtAssist device applies compression to the foot, ankle and calf using comfortable cuffs to increase arterial blood flow. This compression regimen simulates the beneficial effects of brisk walking, without pain.

First, the ArtAssist device compresses the foot and ankle. A second later the calf is compressed and the foot, ankle and calf veins are almost completely emptied. In return, the arterial blood is more easily pushed down to the toes and blood-deprived tissues.
The ArtAssist device triples blood flow to the skin of the feet.

A second mechanism of action which accounts for the large blood flow increase involves the endothelium, which are cells that comprise the lining of all blood vessels. Endothelial cells release important biochemical factors, such as nitric oxide that help circulate the blood. These substances are released in amounts corresponding to the rate of blood flow moving along the cells that line the vessels.

Loss of Pulsatile Flow
Before the ArtAssist Device Therapy

A person with poor circulation (peripheral arterial occlusive disease) has lost pulsatile blood flow and blood moves sluggishly. This prevents release of those important biochemical factors needed to maintain proper circulation.

When the ArtAssist device is used, pulsatility is returned to a limb by rapid compression and rapid release of compression. This creates momentary high flow rates intended to stimulate release of the important biochemical factors and likely stimulates the formation of collateral vessels.

Patient Testimonies...

"Out of many therapies I tried to heal my ulcer, the ArtAssist device was clearly the most effective. Other treatments generally require a certain amount of circulation to the ulcer, while the ArtAssist device addresses the underlying problem by restoring the blood flow necessary for healing. I quickly started renting the ArtAssist device and then worried about insurance. If I had waited for insurance approval, I'm convinced I would have lost my leg below the knee - a tremendous expense which they WOULD pay for!"
Mark Hutchins, Brattle Boro, VA

“I couldn’t get comfortable at night because of the pain in my legs.  Also, my walking was very limited; I would have to stop 4 times just to get the mail.  After using the ArtAssist device, the night pain stopped and it dramatically increased my walking distance.  I can get the mail without having to stop.”
F.C.  San Diego, CA

Doctor’s Testimony...

“There are many problems for patients who cannot undergo surgery; amputations will typically result in these cases.  Now there is an option.  The ArtAssist device is helping patients by increasing blood flow, preventing amputations, and improving patients’ quality of life.”
Dr. Louridas, Chief of Vascular Surgery
